The Konkan Vikas Samiti has reached out to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, urging the merger of Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) with Indian Railways. Jayawant Shankar Darekar, representing the Samiti, stated that they have been pursuing this merger for the last six months, seeking the minister’s support for the merger of Konkan Railway with Indian Railways, including addressing its debt liabilities.
Darekar emphasized that the integration would effectively address transportation gaps in the merger, enhance accessibility, and accelerate crucial infrastructure projects currently impeded by KRCL’s financial constraints. The existing challenges in coordinating trains between the two railway zones and the dependency of Konkan Railway on other zones for facilities like loco shed and workshop were highlighted.
To optimize efficiency, the Samiti proposed allocating the Roha to Madure section in Maharashtra to the Central Railway, while assigning the Karwar to Mangaluru section in Karnataka to the South Western Railway. The decision regarding the route in Goa would be based on the demands of local citizens.
Darekar stressed the importance of considering the passengers’ perspectives, as they are the primary stakeholders in Konkan Railway. The proposed merger aims to streamline operations, improve service quality, and address the infrastructure needs of the Konkan region, benefiting both passengers and the railway network.
