Mangalore : Mangalore South MLA JR Lobo visited the fisheries port in Mangalore on May 23, Thursday and inspected the Third Phase fisheries yard works which are presently underway..
The MLA held discussions with fishermen leaders and the contractors of the project on the problems pertaining to the port. The contractors informed the MLA that the dredging works would begin as soon as the construction of the 750 meter long retention wall is complete.
Later speaking to reporters, Lobo said the works of constructing a 63000 square feet fisheries yard in Bunder and 30,000 square feet yard in Bengre are underway since two years at a cost of Rs 56.7 crores. Pointing out that there are complaints that the works have caused some problems to residents of Bolar, Hoigebazar and other areas, the MLA said steps would be taken to solve the same.
Lobo said as the project does not envisage a brake water for Netravathi river and with even the ramp near Hoigebazar ruptured ,there is a possibility of rain waters gushing into the nearby houses during monsoons. He said he has already instructed the engineers concerned to prepare the blue print of a project to solve the problem. The same would be placed before the Fisheries Minister for his approval, Lobo said.
