Mangaluru: When you hear the words “cybercrime cell police station” you would probably picture a room full of computers powered by the fastest internet on earth, being manned by smartly dressed internet sleuths ready to pounce and bring down anyone who dares commit a crime online. At least that’s what I imagine the Mangaluru’s cybercrime branch looks like. It’s probably all the movies I’ve been watching.
If you imagined what I imagine, then this will come as a big shock to you… Mangaluru’s year-old cybercrime cell, get this, does not have an internet connection! Apparently it has been this way since the division was first conceived, How in the name of all that is holy have they managed to operate in a city where at least 2 cyber crimes are reported in a day, you ask? I’ve got two words for you – Mobile Hotspot!
Yes! the dedicated sleuths of the cybercrime cell are solving your cases, one at a time, using their mobiles as internet hotspots.
A police officer lamented that the process is taking a long time and since they love their work, they use their mobile phones to solve cases.
The city police commissioner T R Suresh said that the police do not require internet to conduct their investigations as they have intranet to access the files that they need, although he did add that they plans to provide internet connections.
“Intranet is not enough for probing internet related cases. We need an internet connection if we are to mine data online to crack the cases,” said a police officer.
