Murder of child: Father-daughter duo get life term

Mangaluru: Kamalaksha Purusha (80) and his daughter Chandrakala (30), both have been given life imprisonment by the additional district and sessions court in connection to murder case of a three-year-old child.

The father-daughter duo, residents of Yeyyady had killed a female child on December 16, 2010, allegedly as human sacrifice for seeking benevolence of a demi-god that they believed in.

The two had confessed to have killed the child of their tenant Kiran Kumar Jha from north India. The family was living in a house that was owned by Kamalaskha Purusha and Chandrakala.

The two had first smothered the child and then severed its head, it is said.

The court has also imposed a fine Rs 80,000 on them.

Purusha has to pay Rs 50,000 failing which he will have to under go an additional five year of imprisonment. Chandrakala has been given life imprisonment along with fine of Rs 10,000 under section 302. Failure to pay fine will entitle her for an additional jail term of a year.

Out of the total fine, Rs 10,000 is payable to Jha.

The sentences were pronounced on Thursday March 31, after holding the accused guilty on Wednesday.
