The arrival of the ‘Seven Seas Navigator’ at New Mangalore Port on December 8, 2023, heralded the commencement of a new cruise season, slated to run until May. Despite the lingering effects of Covid-19, the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) reports a bustling cruise tourism season, albeit below pre-pandemic levels.

Cruise Tourism Growth:

While the port handled 21 cruise vessels in 2019-20, the numbers dipped in the subsequent years, with six vessels in 2022-23. However, the fiscal year 2023-24 witnessed a slight uptick, with the port welcoming eight vessels.

Economic Contribution:

The influx of cruise visitors is anticipated to significantly boost the local economy, fostering revenue generation across various sectors such as tourism, hospitality, and transportation.

Enhancing Visitor Experience:

NMPA has implemented various measures to enhance visitor experience, including personalized services, cultural engagements, and an increase in immigration counters. Collaboration with local travel and hospitality firms further enriches the tourist experience.

Community Engagement:

The port engages hospitality students from local universities to provide personalized assistance to visitors, offering practical experience while ensuring top-notch service quality.

Cultural Showcase:

Virtual reality booths and traditional cultural performances are organized to showcase the region’s rich heritage, adding to the allure of the tourist experience.

Infrastructure Development:

Plans are underway to augment port infrastructure, including the construction of a dedicated cruise gate, to better accommodate visiting cruise liners.

Economic Benefits:

William D’Souza, Vice-President (Finance) of the United Federation of Travel Agents’ Association, underscores the economic benefits of cruise tourism, emphasizing the need for government support and stakeholder collaboration to further develop this sector in the region.

Through concerted efforts and collaborative initiatives, New Mangalore Port aims to emerge as a prominent destination for cruise tourism, enriching the local economy and offering memorable experiences to visitors.
