Mangaluru: The Pilikula Nisargadhama has got a rare visitor in the form of a leucistic white python. Residents of Kuppepadav last week, found this rare creature in their vicinity and informed the zoo officials who in turn got it housed in the Nisarga Dhama three days ago.
Speaking to News Karnataka, Director of the Nisarga Dhama Jayaprakash Bhandary said that it is perhaps the only one of its kind to be found in the Indian zoo. He said that the creature belongs to the rock python species and is one of the rare among the rarest creatures to exist. The pure white colour it dons is due to the suppression of pigmentation, he said adding that it is a naturally generated creature and is totally different from the similar looking ball pythons which are bread at pet care centres.
He further said that it is for the first time that the Pilikula zoo has seen such a creature.
The python is six-feet long and is about two-years-old. The lifespan of this creature is up to 25 years.
The python is currently kept under quarantine to get used to the zoo conditions and will be open for public viewing in two-three days.
