Poll drama: Verbal spat between leaders, VHP leader’s car stoned

Mangaluru: The polling in the district hit a rough patch, as a couple of leaders were found indulging in a verbal spat while another leader’s car was stoned.

Rivalry between Minister Abhayachandra Jain and BJP leader Jagadish Adhikari is not new. The two often take turns in pitting against each other. Another similar incident took place today as the two leaders engaged in a verbal spat at the election booth at Borugudde in Moodbidri.

In another incident, a group of miscreants pelted stones on VHP leader Jagadish Shenava’s car which was parked at Polali in Addooru.

Local police rushed to the spot and are probing the matter. The reason for the pelting is not yet ascertained. It is learnt that the police are inspecting the vehicles to trace the miscreants.

Apart from these two incidents, the polling has been going on smoothly. About 29. 09 per cent votes were recorded in the district by 11 am. Sullia recorded lowest polls with less than 300 voters turning up to cast their franchise so far.

The fate of 116 candidates for 36 seats in zilla panchayat and 361 candidates for 136 taluk panchayat seats in the district will be sealed by 5 p.m. The numbers of candidates contesting the election from different parties are: Congress – 36, BJP – 36, JD(S) –
11, BSP – 1, CPI – 1, CPM – 7, JD(U) – 2, SDPI – 3 and independents – 19.
