Roshni Nilaya to hold webinar on draft National Council Social Work Education Bill

Mangaluru: School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru in collaboration with Karnataka Association of Professional Social Workers (KAPSW) and Coastal Karnataka Social Work Educators is organizing a webinar on ‘National Council for Social Work Education in India – Scope and Way Forward’ on 12 July at 4.30 PM in an effort to bring awareness on the draft National Council for Social Work Education Bill (2021). The webinar is also in collaboration with several university partners and will seek suggestions and views from the concerned people to make this bill more effective.

Social work in India has a long history as a professional discipline as early as 1936. The profession still struggles to get professional legitimacy. Social workers have been attempting to form a social work council to address these issues for a very long time and the result of this effort was the proposal of the National Council for Social Work Education Bill (2021) which aims to bring constructive changes in the social work education. The bill also aims to strengthen the quality of education from the local level to the national level. The bill has been prepared with a working group of professional social workers.

Guest speakers for the online event are Dr Murli Desai, former professor and head, Social Work Education and Practice Cell, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai who is also the Convenor of Drafting Committee, National Council for Social Work Education Bill, 2021; Dr Sanjai Bhatt, Professor, Delhi School of Social Work and also National Convenor of NCSWE National Campaign Committee and Dr Ipe Varghese, Head, Department of Social Work, BCM College, Kottayam and also General Secretary of Kerala Association of Professional Social Workers (KAPS). 

Other eminent speakers at the webinar are Dr Ghandi Doss, Professor Emeritus, Bangalore University and Central University and President of India Network of Professional Social Worker Association (INPSWA); N.V.Vasudeva Sharma, Executive Director of CRT-Child Rights Trust, Bengaluru and also the President of Karnataka Association of Professional Social Workers (KAPSW) and Dr Juliet C.J, Principal, School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru.
