Mangaluru: Spearhead Academy, A centre for Media Studies, a unit of Village TV (R.) Mangaluru, launched a monthly webinar series, under the title Straight from the Journalist. The first state-level webinar was on Dec. 14, 2022, Wednesday. Academy having its dream to train young media aspirants to be professionals with, in-depth knowledge of journalism, chose “The Evolution of Journalism: Past, Present and Future,” as the topic for the month. D Umapathy, a veteran journalist and a much sort of after-media advisor of Karnataka was the resource person of the day.
CA Valerian Dalmeida, Mentor and Advisor of Spearhead Academy made the opening remark of the day during his welcome speech. While speaking on the importance and the objective of the Academy, he said “The Academy was thought about to create more employment opportunity for the rural youth, particularly those who want to pursue Journalism and media as the option for a career. The Academy will be dedicated in its service and will always strive for academic excellence with cent per cent employment rate.” He also added “When the students start their course, they will start earning from day one. Earn while studying is the key differentiating factor.”
D Umapathy, the eminent resource person of the day chose Naom Chomsky’s five filters of mass media as a talking point, stating that the five filters embark well on the topic of the day. Talking about the five filters; ownership, advertising, official sources, flak, and marginalizing dissent he well connected to the current phenomena as examples. His 45 minutes of talk on the topic kept the participants glued to their gadgets with rare blinks of an eye.
The webinar was well attended to, with more than 100 participants. There were participants from all over the state irrespective of age and experience. The surprise of all, the number never dropped to less than 100 at the last minute. 
All applauses go to the resource person of the day for making it intriguing. There were Scholars, Doctors, Professors, Journalists, Students PhD, Lecturers, and students who made the day a grand success with active participation. There were several questions asked by the involved participants, to which the resource person answered with at most precision and accuracy.
The host of the day Roshan Honest Raj, Vice Principal, Spearhead Academy expressed gratitude to the august gathering, particularly to the resource person of the day, foremen of the Village TV (R.) Mangaluru, and all the participants. A special mention was made to scholars, professors, and doctors to acknowledge the presence. The academy is set to come up with more of its kind.
