Mangaluru: It is now mandatory for all apartments coming up in rural areas of the Dakshina Kannada district to have Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs).
Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr R Selvamani, during the DK Zilla Panchayat meeting, informed that the apartment owners will receive a licence only after the construction of STPs. An order in this regard was sent to all the 230 gram panchayats in the district.
Even though it is necessary for apartments to have STPs, the owners have, so far, not taken this seriously. Hence, during the ZP general meeting, the ZP members, including Mamatha Gatti, said that there are no drainage facilties in rural areas and that apartments had not constructed proper channels to drain the wastewater.
When the members raised this issue, the CEO said that all apartments coming up in the rural areas of the district, should possess their own STPs and legal action will be taken against those who violate this direction.
