Sullia: A group of four wild elephants have destroyed crops and created panic among the residents of Sullia and nearby areas as they are trying to enter human inhabited areas in the last few days.
After giving a breather, elephants again have wrecked havoc by destroying coconut, areca and banana plantations in Alletty and Ajjavara village limits. They have camped on the banks of river Payaswini near Basmadka and are making efforts to enter Sullia town municipal limits by crossing the river, thereby creating panic among the residents.
Forest department staff and villagers are trying their level best to drive them back into the forest by beating drums, setting camp fires and bursting crackers.
The elephants are moving round Tudiyadka, Narkodu and Bellapare villages causing extensive damage to crops.
Mandekolu, Ajjavara and Aletty villages have borne the brunt of elephant attacks over the years.
