Udupi : On the two months part of anti-drug abuse awareness programme which organized by Udupi District Police, Udupi district Working Journalists’ Association and the District Press Club, the 5 km run sponsored by Manipal University was organized on Sunday, 23rd September to awareness of drug addiction free society for the construction of more than 3000 students and the general public enthusiastically.
Ranging from small children, aged persons, students, employees, officers and police officers participated in during 5 km run which flagged off by Laxman Nimbargi District Police Superintendent, Dr H S Ballal, Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University and other dignitaries at Manipal University building campus.
The 5 km run began from Manipal University building via Upendra Pai Circle, Syndicate Circle, Venugopal Temple, MIT Swimming Pool, Kamath Café, Tiger Circle to Manipal University building.
Speaking after a meeting at University Campus, Dr H. S. Ballal, Manipal University Pro-Chancellor said that youths are the future of the country and they should be aware of the effects of drug addiction and abuse in large numbers. We should appreciate that such a large number of students participated in this run in order to get awareness on drug addiction and drug-free society for the construction of life. Students should be aware that the effects due to drug addiction, he said.
Laxman Nimbargi said that India has one of the highest numbers of young people in the world. In order to the development of the country in the field of economic, social and political, the role of the youths for development of the country very vast. Youths are the prospect of our country. But young people should travel on the right path at right time in their career. The illegal drug abuse would be controlled through various awareness programmes such as to give a good message to it. Only police and other law agencies cannot completely abolish drug abuse. The prevention of illegal drug supply and most importantly to prevent the drug consumption is most essential. If supply decreases, the demand also becomes less and lesser. Especially students should stop the drug abuse and then possible to drug-free society, he said.
Large numbers of police personnel including SP, Additional SP Kumar Chandra, DySP Kumaraswamy, Belliyappa, Dinesh Kumar and other police officials like CPI, PSI of various police stations of the district, and other about 100 policemen kept aside their Kaki uniform and wearing a sports suit.
H. Hande, Syndicate Bank’s General Manager, Zonal Deputy Manager B R Hiremath, Udupi Working Journalists Association President Ganesh Prasad Pandelu, Udupi Press Club Convener Nagaraja Rao, KMC Professor Dr Vinod Nayak and others were present.
