Udupi: A fish market built at a cost of Rs 10 lakh remains unused while the fisherwomen carry on their brisk business at Kemmannur junction road posing lot of problems to locals of Santhekatte, Gopalpura ward.

The issue was raised by Chandrakanth Naik, Gopalpura Ward Councilor during the question hour at the monthly general meeting held at the Udupi City Municipal Council here on Thursday, November 30.

D Manjunathiah, CMC Commissioner said that the fisherwomen used the market only for three months and then returned to the junction.

“Even after informing them that it was illegal to sell fish at the junction, the woman have not paid heed. They say that business had taken nosedive at the market and hence would never want to return there,” he said adding that the chicken and mutton vendors have been functioning at the market itself.

The municipal commissioner also said that fishermen leaders who can actually solve the problem are fuelling confusions by asking women not to go to the market.

Meanwhile, member Vasanthi Shetty spoke about the street vendors causing problems in Udupi city, responding to which the Municipal Commissioner said that a survey would be conducted in a month and all details would be furnished before the CMC during the next monthly meeting.

A lot of chaos was seen between the ruling Congress councilors as well as opposition BJP councilors.

With regard to setting up of Indira canteen, the commissioner clarified that the decision was taken in the state cabinet and the information was sent to all district commissioners for this purpose.

Waste management, drainage issues, accounts of certain matters and other matters were discussed during the meeting. Meenakshi Madhav Bannanje President and Sandhya Tilakraj, vice-president were present at the meeting.
