Udupi: An act of bravery was displayed in Udupi as a young girl saved her cousin sister who accidentally slipped and fell into the river Souparnika near the Kodachadri mountain range on Friday July 20.
It is learnt that Jyothi Marathi (16) saved her cousin sister Mamatha Marathi (15) from drowning after a long struggle. The latter is also said to have had an open heart surgery few months back.
The incident took place on Monday, when due to heavy rain, all the schools in the district remained closed. As the holiday was declared late, there were students who were not aware of it. Hence, Jyothi with her other 3 friends went to school as usual. However, after crossing the river, they got the information that schools are closed.
On the way back home, Mamatha Marathi unexpectedly slipped and fell into the river and as it was an isolated area, no one was there to help them. In this situation, a brave Jyothi, not worrying about herself jumped into the river and after a long struggle in the gushing water, managed to save Mamtha who was two hundred meters away.
Both survived with minor injuries. They are students studying in Kollur Shree Mookambika temple school. Following this incident, the school management has informed parents not to send their children to school during heavy rains.
