Karkala: A girl employed as a nurse in Kasturba Medical College Hospital (KMC) befriended an auto driver who used to drop her regularly, only to be left alone after giving birth to his daughter.
Sharath Shetty, a member of Neere-Bailur Gram Panchayath and an auto driver by profession befriended a nurse working at KMC hospital in Manipal. He started regularly dropping her in his auto on her way to hospital. Moved by his sweet assurances, the girl fell in love with him, eventually to become an unwed mother.
On November 27 at 10 am, when the girl experienced labour pains, he dropped her to the nearby K S Hegde Hospital. On November 28, she gave birth to a baby girl and the girl’s mother informed him about the delivery. But Sharath refused to visit the hospital.
On November 30, the girl spoke to him over the phone and explained about the developments. She proposed marriage relying on his earlier assurances which he negated after she delivered the baby. Perturbed by the developments, girl handed over the new born to the Child Welfare Centre.
On December 1, Sharath Shetty visited the girl’s family and assured her of marriage. However, he is absconding after that, taking everyone by surprise.
Left alone, the nurse and her family members visited a nearby counselling centre in Karkala seeking guidance. Based on the counsellor Sunitha’s advice, the girl has lodged a complaint at the Karkala Police Station. Circle Inspector Joy Antony is investigating.
Incidentally, Sharath Shetty, a staunch BJP worker had won the GP elections beating fellow party member and former president Ramesh Kallotte in the previous elections.
