Udupi : Manipal Police, with the help of locals succeeded in nabbing rape and murder accused, who gave the cops the slip.
He had escaped on March 31 while being taken to Hiriyadka prison from the court. He was re-captured in Pernankila forest near Manipal on Monday, April 1.
Hanumanthappa Bassappa, a native of Badami in Bagalkot district was arrested on March 29 in connection with the rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl at Sagri near Manipal, on March 9.
As per the information received from the public at Pernankila, he went to a house and asked the occupants to give him food and shelter. The locals of Pernankila informed the police about the person. On receiving the tip-off, the police surrounded the house and captured Hanumanthappa and brought him back to Hiriyadka prison where he will serve 14 days of judicial custody.
The district police had taken action on Head constable of Manipal police station, driver and two police for negligence while escorting the accused back to the prison.
