Udupi: The Udupi District Building Workers’ Association staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Manipal on Thursday September 22, against the proposed use of funds by the Construction Workers Welfare Board for housing projects and demanding sand mining at a cheaper rate.

All those selected as beneficiaries under the Slum Clearance Board and the Housing Scheme of the Central and State Governments have been given the opportunity to register fake labourers with the Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board to avail the benefits. This should be properly investigated and action should be taken.

The protesters demanded that genuine workers should get the facility.
Non-construction workers should file a criminal case against those who have been registered through forged documents. Since the number of government buses in Udupi District is less, arrangements should be made to give cash instead of bus passes to the workers, they demanded.

Association Secretary Balakrishna Shetty, President Shekhar Bangera, Shashidhar Golla and construction workers participated in the protest.
