Udupi: The unauthorised campaign of data collection by ASHA workers that had been launched and backed by the local police was put to an end on Friday December 2 after a viral video sparked uproar on Thursday.

A video of a woman explaining the incident went viral on social media on Thursday.

According to sources, locals in Uchila said that the ASHA workers visited homes asking for information about every family member without a formal letter or sealed document from the government. People had voiced their disagreement with the campaign and had refused to fill out the forms provided by the ASHA workers.

The woman said in the video, “The ASHA workers came to our homes. They threatened us and said that the police would come and take the information from us when we refused to provide the information they were asking for. When we questioned them, they wanted our bank account details and passport details.”

She further said, “We complained about these ASHA workers’ threats to the Gram Panchayath officials. They said that no orders for data collection or surveys have been given. Who are these individuals gathering the data for if the officials have not sought any data or information?”

The ASHA personnel collected information for all family members, including names, educational information, mobile numbers, email addresses, PAN cards, passport numbers, Aadhar cards, vehicle numbers, gas connection numbers, and landline numbers.

Along with the school information for the children at home, the forms also asked people to indicate if they were vegetarians or not. The applications also asked for bank information and vaccination records.
