A complaint has been filed against Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao following his controversial remarks regarding Veer Savarkar. The complaint was submitted by Tejas Gowda, a leader of the Bajrang Dal and an activist, who expressed concern over the minister’s choice of words and the potential impact of his statements.

In his complaint, Gowda stressed that as a person in a responsible position, Gundu Rao should exercise caution when speaking publicly. He pointed out the inappropriateness of the minister’s comments, particularly those suggesting that Savarkar, despite being a Brahmin, consumed beef. “He should be more careful in his language. I would like to ask Dinesh Gundu Rao: Do you have any proof that Savarkar consumed beef? Or, did Veer Savarkar appear in your dreams and admit it?” Gowda stated, challenging the validity of the minister’s claims.

Furthermore, Gowda issued a challenge to Gundu Rao, inviting him to set a date, place, and time for a public discussion regarding these claims. In a pointed critique, he advised the health minister to focus on the health of the people rather than engaging in controversial discussions about historical figures.

The controversy erupted when Dinesh Gundu Rao, during the launch of the Kannada version of the book “Gandhi’s Assassin: The Making of Nathuram Godse and His Idea of India,” made several remarks about Savarkar. He stated, “Savarkar was not opposed to cow slaughter. He was a Chitpavan Brahmin but a non-vegetarian. In that sense, he was a modernist.” Rao further elaborated that while Savarkar’s ideology had fundamentalist aspects, he also exhibited modern traits.

Rao compared Savarkar to historical figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Muhammad Ali Jinnah, noting that Gandhi was a staunch vegetarian, deeply rooted in Hindu beliefs, yet his actions sometimes contradicted those principles. In contrast, he described Jinnah as a devout Islamist who indulged in drinking wine and, according to some accounts, ate pork, yet became a prominent Muslim icon.

The health minister’s statements have sparked significant political discourse, drawing both support and criticism. While some agree with Rao’s analysis of Savarkar, others view the comments as inflammatory and disrespectful to a figure revered by many in India. The situation underscores the ongoing debate about historical narratives and the figures that shape them.

As the complaint proceeds, it remains to be seen how this controversy will unfold and whether it will impact Dinesh Gundu Rao’s political career and responsibilities as Karnataka’s health minister.
