Davangere Man Dies Allegedly in Custody, Mob Attacks Police Station

Davangere: As many as 11 police personnel were injured after a mob mostly relatives of a man who was apprehended by the police and later allegedly died in police custody tried to enter Channagiri police station and pelted stones at the station on Friday night. In the incident, 10 police vans were also damaged.

Speaking about the incident, Davangere District Superintendent of Police Uma Prasanth said that the deceased, Adil, was brought to the police station on Friday. Adil then collapsed at the police station. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he died. The SP said that Adil was not even in the police station for 6-7 minutes.

Despite this, the relatives of the deceased are alleging custodial death. “We too have CCTV cameras. Everything is being investigated. We will conduct an impartial investigation. The deceased’s father has filed a complaint. The investigation is on. The body has already been sent to Davangere District Hospital. Given the seriousness of the case, the investigation will be conducted in the presence of a magistrate. A total of four cases have been registered in connection with the incident. Seven police vehicles and 11 police personnel were injured in the stone pelting. The situation is currently under control,” the SP said.

Adil (30), a resident of Tipu Nagar in Channagiri town, was taken into custody by the police for allegedly playing matka (a form of gambling) and brought to the police station in the evening. Adil, who suddenly developed low blood pressure, collapsed at the police station. He was immediately hospitalized by the police.

However, the accused died without responding to treatment. Relatives of Adil, blaming the police for his death, vandalized the police station.
