Davangere police have cracked 385 criminal cases, including vehicle thefts, robbery, kidnapping, and murder, using footage from 524 surveillance cameras installed under the Smart City Mission. Between March 2022 and December 2024, these cameras provided crucial evidence for over 435 cases, enabling swift resolution of many crimes, some within three hours of being reported.
Strategically positioned at markets, transport hubs, and key roads, the cameras form part of the City Surveillance System, monitored at the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) and Police Command and Control Centre (PCCC). Equipped with advanced pan-tilt-zoom capabilities and analytics, the system can identify traffic violations, gatherings exceeding five people, and criminal activities.
Highlights include solving four murders, five robberies, 11 mobile thefts, and over 80 vehicle thefts. Cameras also detected vehicles involved in crimes from other districts and states passing through Davangere. Surveillance footage has proven instrumental in responding to 4,128 emergencies and identifying suspects in 49 cases related to women and children.
Superintendent of Police acknowledged the cameras’ vital role in maintaining law and order, citing their impact on detecting traffic violations and other offenses. The system’s success earned Davangere Smart City Limited the ‘Citizen-Centric Smart City’ award from Kochi Metro Rail Limited, Kerala.
