Farmers are using cycle tire tools to remove weeds

Farmers

Dharwad: Farmers in rural areas are employing an innovative method to tackle weed issues between crops caused by monsoon rains. Using tools made from bicycles, they engage in the process of “edekunte,” which involves clearing unwanted debris. This practice has become popular as it saves farmers from expenses incurred in renting bulls for the same purpose.

Various crops such as urad, soybean, groundnut, cotton, and jowar were sown after last month’s monsoon rains. Now that these crops have flourished, farmers have started using edekunte approximately 20 days after sowing.

Traditionally, farmers would hire bulls for around ₹1,500 to ₹2,000 per acre to perform this task. However, many farmers now prefer using an edekunte tool made from a bicycle. This not only eliminates rental costs but also significantly reduces labor expenses.

Edekunte helps loosen the soil around the crops and removes any weeds that may have sprouted due to heavy rainfall. This process allows the soil to settle at the base of the plants and promotes stronger, straighter growth.

The rising costs and upkeep of bulls have prompted many farmers to explore alternative methods like edekunte. By charging ₹2,000 per acre or renting out their equipment on a daily basis as edekunte service providers, they can cover their expenses while offering cost-effective solutions to fellow farmers.

Overall, this inventive approach demonstrates how farmers are adapting traditional practices while embracing modern techniques to overcome challenges in crop cultivation.
