A deeply saddening incident occurred in Belagavi district, Karnataka, where an elderly couple, who were residents of a village in Khanapur, tragically passed away after becoming victims of a cyber fraud scheme. The couple, who had no children, were found deceased by their neighbors on Thursday.
In a heartfelt note left behind, the man, a retired state government employee, expressed that no one should be held responsible for their deaths. He mentioned that they did not wish to live dependent on others. The note also referenced two individuals—Sumit Birra and Anil Yadav—who allegedly played a role in the fraudulent scheme. The man claimed that Birra had contacted him, posing as a telecom official from New Delhi, and informed him that a SIM card had been fraudulently registered in his name, which had caused him distress.
The note further indicated that the call was later transferred to Yadav, who claimed to be a Crime Branch official. Yadav reportedly requested sensitive financial details under the threat of legal action. Feeling pressured and overwhelmed, the couple transferred a significant amount of money, but unfortunately, the demands continued.
Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have confirmed the substantial transactions made by the couple. This tragic event underscores the growing concern about cyber fraud and the need for greater awareness, especially among vulnerable individuals.
