A heartwarming rescue operation by firefighters in Maharashtra has struck a chord with social media users after a video showed an owl being saved from a dangerous kite string, commonly known as manjha. The incident, reported from Pimpri-Chinchwad, has sparked renewed calls for responsible kite flying and compassion towards wildlife.
The video was shared on Instagram by Amit Khairnar, who first spotted the owl hanging upside down from an overhead wire, its wing tightly entangled in the sharp kite string. Despite repeated attempts to free itself, the owl remained trapped, while other predatory birds began circling, putting it at further risk.
Firefighters step in for delicate rescue
Realising the urgency of the situation, Khairnar alerted the local fire department. A fire engine arrived promptly, and firefighters began a careful rescue operation. Due to the height and the bird’s fragile condition, the task proved challenging.
Firefighters eventually managed to lower the wire from a nearby building and safely bring the owl down. The kite string lodged in its wing was gently removed, after which the bird was taken to a veterinarian for medical examination and treatment.

Khairnar thanked the firefighters in his post, praising their readiness, sensitivity towards animals and selfless service. The video has since crossed 6 lakh views, with hundreds of comments applauding both the citizen who raised the alarm and the fire brigade for their swift action.
