In a major cash-for-jobs scandal, hundreds of Goans were reportedly swindled of crores of rupees in promises for government jobs. So far, Goa police have registered 20 cases statewide, resulting in 19 arrests, including police personnel, senior government officials, and others with alleged political links. The scam has affected multiple state departments, including public works, health, education, and police.
The scandal came to light last month with the arrest of Pooja Naik, who allegedly assured job seekers of government positions through political connections. Following her arrest, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant cautioned against corruption and urged the public to report similar incidents. Sawant emphasized that “government jobs are not for sale” and warned of stringent action, including property seizure, against those involved.
Victims were typically acquaintances or relatives of the accused, often seeking stable government employment. Allegations revealed the accused used the money to finance luxury lifestyles, including gold and high-end vehicles. Tragically, a government attendant named Shridhar Kerkar died by suicide after being implicated in the scandal.
While Congress has demanded a specialized investigation, the ruling BJP highlighted that its administration exposed the scam and committed to justice.
