A controversy has emerged in Hassan, Karnataka, as members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a protest in front of Master College on Monday. The groups are calling for the dismissal of a lecturer accused of organising an alleged anti-Hindu discourse by Mohammad Kunhi, secretary of the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, three days earlier.
The protest was triggered after students reported the event, which was broadcast on a local channel, to ABVP leaders. Notably, during the protest, the speaker’s name was not mentioned by the organisation, and the college has also kept the faculty member’s identity confidential.
Allegations Against the College
Srinivas, a leader from ABVP, claimed that the college’s faculty and management were involved in facilitating the discourse. He called for strict action against the lecturer responsible, citing concerns of bias against Hindu students.
No Holidays for Hindu Festivals: Srinivas alleged that the college does not grant holidays for major Hindu festivals such as Shivratri and Basava Jayanti.
Restrictions on Hindu Symbols: He also claimed that the installation of Ganesha murthy is prohibited on campus, while Muslim students are granted special privileges, including facilities for namaz in the college cellar.
BJP Joins the Call for Action
BJP leader Venugopal warned that if the lecturer responsible for organising the discourse is not dismissed, the college would face boycotts from Hindu students.
The ABVP, affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has been involved in various controversies in the past, including allegations of violence and communal tensions. The situation in Hassan remains tense as the college has yet to respond to the demands, and the outcome of the protest is still unfolding.
