Haveri: The Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department has suspended Taluk Panchayat Executive Officer (EO) Bharat Hegde following allegations of irresponsible behaviour and misconduct. This action was prompted by a proposal submitted by Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Akshay Sridhara, which highlighted Hegde’s erratic conduct and unprofessionalism.
Details of Suspension
Bharat Hegde, who was transferred to Dandeli PT on July 29, was officially relieved of his duties on July 30. Despite this, he contested the transfer order and secured an injunction from the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal. Hegde then reinstated himself in his original position on August 1 without notifying his superiors, which further exacerbated the situation.
The suspension was largely influenced by Hegde’s absence during a critical period of heavy rainfall in Haveri district. His lack of presence during this time resulted in significant damage to homes and flooding of crops, severely affecting local farmers. Additionally, Hegde missed a quarterly progress review meeting and failed to respond satisfactorily to a show cause notice issued to him.
Consequences and Proceedings
The suspension order has emphasised that Hegde’s actions are being reviewed through a departmental inquiry. During the suspension period, he will receive a subsistence allowance as per the applicable rules. This disciplinary action reflects the department’s commitment to maintaining accountability and ensuring that officials perform their duties diligently, especially in times of crisis.
