Hubballi: A Republican Party of India (RPI) candidate from Kundgol Assembly constituency was stabbed by his friend at Chandragiri Layout in Rajivnagar here on evening of Friday May 12 over a trivial issue.

RPI candidate Mallikarjuna Thotagera (46), who was assaulted, is currently undergoing treatment at KIMS Hospital and out of danger. It is learnt that his friend Sunil, a resident of Chandragiri Layout, assaulted him.

Mallikarjun is contesting from Kundgol constituency as an independent.

When Mallikarjuna went to Sunil’s house to meet him over a financial issue, a heated argument broke out between the two. As it turned into a disaster, there was an argument between each other with use of abusive words. Sunil then got angry and assaulted him with a knife and fled.

It is learnt that Mallikarjun was making a living by running a grocery shop in Hanumanthanagara.
