Hubballi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited the khadi flag manufacturing Unit on Tuesday and offered support to the protesting employees of the Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangha (KKGSS) in Hubballi on Wednesday August 3.
The only flag-making unit in India certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards, KKGSS, has been organising protests over the Centre’s decision to amend the flag code and allow polyester flags in the City.
During his visit, Rahul also interacted with the workers and engaged in the flag-making process.
Speaking to mediapersons he said khadi and charkha represent Mahatma Gandhi and India. “However, the BJP wants nothing to be made by small and medium businesses in the country while expecting everything to be produced by those people favoured by it. They changed the flag rules for that reason.”
The unit was visited by several Congress leaders, including working president Satish Jarakiholi and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President D. K. Shivakumar in July.
According to sources, the polyester flags are allegedly produced in a few units in Surat, Gujarat, where a Union Minister’s son is a partner. Rahul took a jab at the policies of the BJP-led government in the country, including demonetisation and farm bills, alleging that they were in the interests of big industrialists and that the government was looting the poor.
