Beltangady: An incident of alleged vandalism has been reported at the Sri Panchalingeshwara Temple, where a man identified as Ajay is accused of entering the premises late Wednesday night and damaging a deity’s idol, causing shock and concern among local residents.
According to preliminary reports, the accused arrived in a vehicle near the temple and created a disturbance in the neighbourhood before proceeding towards the temple complex.
Disturbance reported before temple entry
Residents stated that Ajay first went to the house of a local resident situated next to the temple and shouted loudly, attempting to gain entry. Family members reportedly intervened, scolded him, and asked him to leave the area.
Shortly thereafter, he is said to have entered the temple premises and jumped into the sacred pond (Jalaka Kere), from where he moved towards the main structure.
Entry into temple and alleged acts of desecration
Authorities said the accused climbed onto the temple structure using a pillar and gained access by removing roof tiles. Once inside, he allegedly moved through different sections of the temple, including the shrine associated with Kodamanittaya Daiva.
During this time, he reportedly removed a bell placed on the deity’s platform and shifted it near the roof tiles. He is also said to have rung a large bell near the theertha mantapa before entering the sanctum.
Inside the sanctum of Lord Gopalakrishna, the accused allegedly took the idol, threw it to the ground, and damaged it. Temple items kept within the shrine were also reportedly scattered during the incident.
Police response and action taken
Personnel from the Venur Police Station reached the spot following the incident and conducted an initial inquiry. The accused was questioned by the police regarding his actions.
According to available information, Ajay was later released after providing a written undertaking. Further details regarding the case, including whether formal charges have been filed, are yet to be confirmed.
Local concern and need for vigilance
The incident has raised concerns among devotees and local residents regarding the security of religious institutions, particularly in rural areas. Temples, often open and accessible, can be vulnerable to such acts if adequate safeguards are not in place.
Community members have called for increased vigilance, including improved lighting, surveillance measures, and periodic patrols by authorities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Conclusion
The vandalism at Sri Panchalingeshwara Temple has left the local community disturbed, highlighting the need for stronger security and timely action in protecting places of worship. Authorities are expected to review the situation and take appropriate measures to prevent recurrence.
