Kalaburagi:  The priests of the Shri Dattatreya Temple in Deval Ganagapur, Afzalpur Taluk, have been accused of creating fake websites for the temple and seeking donations from devotees.

The temple is allegedly a part of the Muzrai (Hindu religious endowment) Department.

The accused made a fake website where they asked for money from devotees. Under the guise of donations, crores of rupees have been looted from the devotees. Shri Dattatreya Temple is the name given to this unlawful website. For a Puja in the temple, which would normally cost less than Rs. 1,000, it is alleged that the priests made the devotees pay Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 50,000 online.

The scam came to light when Yashwant Gurukar, President of the Dattatreya temple development committee visited the temple to check the official website of the temple. Gurukar found that there were about 6 to 7 fake websites for temples that the priests were in charge of managing.

The priests had amassed over Rs. 20 Crore over the past six years. the development committee claimed that the priests turned off the neighbouring CCTV cameras to steal money from the temple hundi (donate box).

According to sources, the website has now been deleted. Further investigation is on.
