Kalaburagi: Hundreds of Buddhist monks, who had come to Sannati after organising a Pabbajja (pindapatha) programme to convey Buddha’s thoughts of peace to the people of the country, stood by the Buddhist site with brooms and shovels to clean it.
The Bhantejis, who were saddened by the plight of thorns and heaps of stones spread around the Sannati Buddha Vihara in Chittapur Taluk, the site of Buddhist inscriptions dating back to the 3rd century during Emperor Ashoka, the king of the Mauryan Empire took to the cleanliness drive themselves.
Charika put down the begging vessels and cut down the thorn saplings and piled them up. He attracted the attention of the rural people by collecting and disposing of solid waste, garbage, stone and cow dung.
