Koppal: Four women were swept away while trying to cross a stream in the Yalaburga Taluk’s Sankanur village on Saturday October 1. It is feared that they drowned.
Locals claim that the high currents of the stream washed away Girija Kallanagouda Mali Patil (32), Bhubaneswari Shantaveeriah Police Patil (40), Pavithra Siddaiah Police Patil (45), and Veena Basavaraja Mali Patil (19) of Sankanur village.
The women were returning home from a cotton factory where they worked at the time of the incident.
Due to the heavy rain that fell earlier in the day, the stream was flowing rapidly. The women tried to cross the stream on foot as usual, unaware of the danger. However, they were swept away by the powerful currents.
According to sources, two of them managed to grab onto tree roots near to the banks. Although the people made attempts to rescue them by using ropes and ladders, they claimed that they were washed away before help could arrive.
