The Karnataka government has approved a 15% increase in bus fares across state-run transport corporations, effective from January 5. The hike aims to cover the rising operational costs, including fuel price surges and workforce expenses. The adjustment is expected to raise ₹74.85 crore monthly, with an annual yield of ₹784 crore. Despite this, opposition party BJP strongly criticized the decision, questioning its fairness, especially regarding the Shakti scheme that offers free bus rides for women. However, the state government emphasized that the increase wouldn’t burden finances, citing grants to transport corporations.
