Karnataka Polytechnic, Mangaluru, renowned for its quality training and preparation of proficient technicians, is gearing up for its 75th diamond jubilee celebrations in November. To commemorate this milestone, the alumni have initiated a project to construct an auditorium within the campus, adjacent to the main administration block, at an estimated cost of Rs 3.5 crore.
According to Principal Harisha Shetty, the polytechnic has been serving the educational needs of meritorious and underprivileged students from coastal Karnataka and other regions since its establishment in 1945. Originally planned for 2021 but postponed due to the pandemic, the jubilee celebrations will feature a weeklong program, including a Karnataka state-level sports meet, a global alumni meet, and a gathering of former and retired staff members.
The institution, which has graduated around 20,000 students now employed worldwide, boasts an alumni association with 6,000 members. Notable alumni include former minister K. Abhayachandra Jain and Gururaj Shetty Gantihole, MLA of Byndoor constituency.
Established during World War II, the college initially offered electrical and mechanical courses. It was first located near Pandeshwar before moving to its current 21-acre campus. Today, it offers eight courses, with polymer technology being highly sought-after. The institute also provides continuing education opportunities through various non-formal, need-based courses.
Currently, Karnataka Polytechnic has 1,562 students, including 238 girls, and offers hostel facilities. Additionally, the institute serves as a nodal agency for state and central government schemes like the PM Vishwakarma scheme.
