Hassan: An innocent Dalit man was brutally assaulted by policeman on duty under the influence of alcohol and a petition was submitted to the District Administration demanding that he be dismissed from service for his inhuman behaviour and compensation of Rs. 10 lakh be given to the victim.

The man, identified as Shekhar, who had a house in Channapattana layout in City, landed in Hassan City at around 10.30 pm on January 5 from Halebidu and was on his way home from Kattinekere vegetable market side when the ASI, a staff of Hassan City Police Station, met him. Harish and his team accused Shekhar of theft and hurled casteist slurs at him. They then attacked him brutally, causing damage to his body and breaking his hand bone, he alleged.

Even after 10 to 15 days of the incident, no case has been registered by the Police Department and the Superintendent of Police has maintained silence even though they are aware of the incident, he added.

He warned that the Police Personnel who had attacked an innocent man by consuming liquor should be dismissed from service and a compensation of Rs. 10 lakh should be given to the victim by the Police Department, otherwise the Jai Bhim Brigade and several other Dalit organisations will gherao the Deputy Commissioner’s Office and protest.

Jai Bhim Brigade Organising Committee District President Rajesh, District Secretary Chandrashekar and others were present at the protest.
