Shivamogga: There is a need for change in the country, said Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President D. K. Shivakumar said that Rahul Gandhi is stepping in today for the same reason.
He visited the house of Ramesh of Huttadimba Village in Sagar, who died in an accident during the Bharat Jodo padyatra on Friday October 28 and reassured the family. Ramesh’s family was later Rs. 10 lakh compensation cheque was distributed.
Congress Leaders Madhu Bangarappa, Belur Gopalakrishna, Kagodu Thimmappa and Kimmane Ratnakar accompanied D. K. Shivakumar.
“We are all involved in this hour of grief. Most of the leaders and activists of the region had come for the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Ramesh was working as the party’s booth President. He used to do voluntary work during the elections. He had come to take a step on Rahul Gandhi’s journey towards unity and integration of the country. He sacrificed his life by stepping on the yatra. That is why we all have come here and are with you, he said.
Replying to a media query on BJP’s criticism of Bharat Jodo Padyatra, he said, “There is no cure for jealousy. Have they embarked on any such adventure? Have they given their life to the country? Have they brought freedom? Has the Constitution been brought in? Have they given houses to the poor and land to the farmers? They have got strength because of the Democracy we have brought. They are criticising us for the same. No matter what the criticism is, we will stand by the poor,” he said.
Reacting to BJP State President Nalin Kumar’s statement that D. K. Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah are scared because Kharge is the AICC President, Shivakumar said, “It is good. I am happy what Nalin Kumar Kateel has said that.”
