Mangaluru: In a swift late-night operation, the Kadri police intercepted a container lorry near the Mangaluru-Padavu highway and uncovered an alleged case of illegal cattle transportation. Acting on credible information provided by Bajrang Dal activists, the police launched a surprise operation and successfully stopped the vehicle, rescuing 35 cattle that were being transported under suspected unlawful circumstances.
The incident has triggered an investigation into the origin and intended destination of the cattle, as well as the identities of those responsible for arranging and facilitating the transportation.
Vehicle intercepted on specific input
According to police sources, the operation was initiated after members of the Bajrang Dal alerted authorities about a container lorry suspected of carrying cattle illegally along the Mangaluru-Padavu stretch. Taking the information seriously, the Kadri police formed a team and began tracking the vehicle.
The container lorry was intercepted at a strategic point on the highway to prevent it from moving further. Officials then conducted a detailed inspection of the vehicle in the presence of witnesses.
Upon opening the container, police found 35 cattle tightly packed inside. Initial observations indicated that the animals were being transported in a manner that raised suspicions about compliance with animal transport and welfare norms.
Cattle rescued, probe underway
The cattle were immediately rescued from the vehicle and arrangements were made to shift them to a safe location. Veterinary examination is expected to be conducted to assess their health condition and to determine whether any cruelty or neglect was involved during transportation.
Police have begun questioning the driver and other persons associated with the lorry to ascertain whether valid permits and transport documents were available. Authorities are also verifying whether the transportation violated provisions related to animal welfare, transport regulations, or other applicable laws.
Officials said that the investigation will focus on tracing the source of the cattle, identifying the intended destination, and establishing whether the transport was meant for lawful trade or for illegal purposes. The role of middlemen, transport operators and any organised network, if involved, will also be examined.
Legal action likely
Based on preliminary findings, a case is likely to be registered under relevant sections pertaining to illegal cattle transport and animal cruelty, if violations are confirmed. Police are collecting documentary evidence and statements to build the case.
Senior officers stated that strict action would be taken against those found guilty, in accordance with the law. They also appealed to the public to provide information regarding suspicious transportation of animals to help curb illegal activities.
The swift interception highlights increased vigilance by city police in responding to intelligence inputs and preventing unlawful activities on highways connecting Mangaluru to neighbouring areas.
Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
