Mangaluru: Ullal police have arrested an accused who had allegedly gone absconding after securing bail from a court in connection with a cheating case, officials said on Thursday, February 6. The accused was traced in Bengaluru by a special police team and produced before the Seventh JMFC Court, which later remanded him to judicial custody.
The arrested individual has been identified as Lakshmeesha Babu (48). He had earlier been named in a registered cheating case and was granted bail through due legal process. However, after being released, he reportedly failed to comply with the bail conditions and did not appear before investigators when required. Following repeated unsuccessful attempts to secure his presence, officers initiated steps to trace and detain him.
Bail conditions allegedly violated
According to police sources, the accused had been directed to cooperate with the investigation as part of his bail conditions. These typically include appearing before the investigating officer when summoned, not influencing witnesses, and keeping authorities informed about residence and movement.
When he allegedly stopped responding and could not be located at his listed address, the investigating team treated the matter as a bail violation. Documentation relating to his non-appearance was placed on record, and further legal steps were initiated to enable his arrest.
Officials said that bail is a legal relief granted with responsibilities, and failure to honour those terms can result in re-arrest and stricter scrutiny by the court.
Special team formed to track movement
A dedicated team led by the station officer was formed to track the accused after he was declared absconding in the case. The team gathered technical inputs and field intelligence, verified leads, and monitored possible locations linked to him.
After sustained follow-up, officers developed credible information about his whereabouts in Bengaluru. Acting on this input, the team travelled there and conducted a targeted operation. He was taken into custody without any reported resistance and brought back under escort after completing procedural formalities.
Investigators said coordinated groundwork and timely information sharing helped in locating him. Such inter-city tracking efforts have become more streamlined due to better data access and communication between units.
Produced before magistrate
Following his arrest, the accused was produced before the Seventh JMFC Court. After reviewing the police report on his alleged bail violation and period of absence, the court ordered that he be remanded to judicial custody.
Legal procedure now requires that any further custodial questioning, if needed, must be sought through a separate application before the court. Prosecutors may also place on record the details of his non-compliance while the cheating case proceeds.
Court sources indicated that bail compliance plays an important role in how future relief applications are considered, especially in financial or cheating-related offences.
Cheating cases under closer scrutiny
Police officials noted that cheating and financial fraud cases often involve detailed documentation and multiple witness statements. When an accused person fails to appear, it can delay evidence collection and prolong the investigation timeline.
Authorities said that special attention is being given to ensure that accused persons in such cases do not evade the legal process after securing bail. Tracking teams are increasingly used to execute pending warrants and trace those who attempt to avoid court proceedings.
Experts point out that courts generally balance personal liberty with investigative needs while granting bail. But once conditions are imposed, strict adherence is expected. Any deviation can lead to cancellation of bail and fresh custody.
Police issue caution on bail compliance
The department reiterated that individuals released on bail must strictly follow every condition imposed by the court. Non-appearance and deliberate evasion are treated seriously and can invite additional legal consequences.
Officers added that complainants and witnesses should stay in touch with investigators and promptly share updates that may assist in case progress. Community cooperation, they said, plays a role in ensuring timely enforcement.
With the accused now in judicial custody, the investigation in the cheating case will continue as per law. Further proceedings will depend on court directions and the evidence placed on record by the prosecution.
