Beltangady: After nearly two decades of separation, a 105-year-old mother and her 85-year-old daughter were finally reunited at Makki in Malavantike village of Beltangady taluk, in an emotional family moment made possible by their grandchildren.
A mother and daughter finally meet
Seethamma, aged 105, has 11 children, with Sushila, 85, being her eldest daughter. While Seethamma lives with her family at Makki, Sushila lives with her children at Phagare in Mithabail village.
Although Sushila had long wished to see her mother, age and ill health prevented her from making the difficult journey. Nearly 20 years had passed since the mother and daughter had last met.
A journey through forest and streams
Reaching Seethamma’s home is no easy task. There is no proper road leading to the house. The journey involves travelling by jeep along a rough forest track, followed by a 1.5-km descent down a hill and a stream crossing.
With Seethamma too old to travel and Sushila unable to make the journey on her own, the grandchildren decided to overcome the difficult terrain and make the reunion possible.
They took Sushila by jeep as far as the vehicle could travel. From there, family members helped her slowly walk along the forest trail until they finally reached Seethamma’s home.
Grandchildren fulfil a cherished wish
The reunion fulfilled a long-standing wish for both the family and the elderly mother and daughter.
“It was our wish as grandchildren to take our grandmother to meet her mother. However, because of our grandmother’s advanced age and the lack of a proper road to the great-grandmother’s house, it was not possible. Now, we have finally been able to make it happen,” grandson Keshava said.
After 20 years, the mother and daughter were once again together — a poignant reminder that some family bonds endure despite distance, age and the passage of time
