AI Tools in DK Education: A Tempting But Harmful Sword

New Project 2024 05 17t103857.366

In coastal districts renowned for their educational institutions, a new wave of college students is embracing AI tools like ChatGPT to bolster their academic performance. These students, including mechanical engineering student Akanksha R, laud the efficiency and effectiveness of AI tools in completing assignments and presentations. They emphasize the time-saving benefits and improved quality of work facilitated by these digital aids. However, they also acknowledge a potential downside: a perceived reduction in creativity and critical thinking when relying solely on AI-generated content.

This sentiment is echoed by another undergraduate student, who appreciates the assistance AI tools provide but emphasizes the importance of using them selectively, recognizing that educators can discern between original and AI-assisted work.

While students champion the streamlining of tasks and increased productivity enabled by AI tools, the teaching community expresses reservations. Many educators caution against over-reliance on digital aids, advocating for a balanced approach that incorporates students’ own knowledge and skills alongside AI assistance. Arati Shanbhag, an associate professor at St Aloysius University, underscores the concern that excessive reliance on digital means may impede students’ learning, creativity, and critical thinking skills. She encourages students to integrate offline and online resources in their academic endeavors.

Conversely, a professor at an architecture college takes a more nuanced view, suggesting that while AI tools can be valuable if used appropriately, students must provide accurate input to yield satisfactory results. The teaching fraternity acknowledges the prevalence of AI tools in academic assignments but emphasizes the importance of maintaining a balance between digital assistance and individual effort.
