A coalition of animal protection groups, including wildlife conservationists and cattle welfare organizations, has strongly opposed the Pilikula Development Authority’s (PDA) plan to host a large-scale Kambala race within the Pilikula Biological Park premises, close to animal enclosures.

The coalition submitted a joint appeal to Ekroop Caur, Secretary of Karnataka’s Department of IT, BT, Science & Technology, and forwarded a copy to Subhash K. Malkhede, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) & Chief Wildlife Warden. The plea is backed by prominent groups such as PETA India, Animal Rahat, People for Cattle in India (PFCI), World Veterinary Service (WVS), IPAN, CUPA, WRRC, HEAL, Fauna Police, Sacred Earth Trust, and FIAPO, which represents 200+ animal welfare organizations nationwide. Additionally, 16 veterinarians co-signed the request.

“Wildlife experts and veterinarians express deep concern for zoo animals and buffaloes subjected to racing. We firmly demand that the disruptive Kambala event be cancelled,” said PETA India’s Tushar Kol.

The appeal warns that thousands of spectators will generate excessive noise, potentially causing severe stress and behavioural disturbances in captive wildlife. Introducing external animals could also pose health risks.

The coalition urges the Karnataka government to take immediate steps to prevent the event, prioritizing the safety, well-being, and dignity of the animals.
