Mangaluru: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy emphasised that constant awareness of duty among police personnel is crucial to effectively control crime and curb illegal activities.
He was speaking at the Karnataka State Police Flag and Welfare Day programme held on Thursday in the city. The event was jointly organised by the Mangaluru City Police, Dakshina Kannada District Police, Special Task Force unit, and the KSRP 7th Battalion Mangaluru unit.
Emphasis on responsibility and preparedness
Addressing the gathering, Commissioner Reddy said that police personnel must develop exemplary character and serve as role models in society. He stressed that officers should take proactive responsibility to ensure that no untoward incidents occur. However, he also noted that in situations where incidents do arise, personnel must be prepared to respond swiftly and effectively.
He underlined that the police department should function in a manner that instils fear among those involved in criminal activities, while simultaneously strengthening public confidence in law enforcement. Officers, he said, must carry confidence in their ability to detect and apprehend offenders.
Karnataka police praised for facilities
Reddy also highlighted that, compared to several other states, the Karnataka Police department is well-equipped and has seen considerable improvements in infrastructure and facilities over the years. These advancements, he said, should translate into better policing outcomes and enhanced public service.
The Commissioner’s remarks come at a time when maintaining law and order remains a key priority in coastal districts, including Dakshina Kannada, which has witnessed periodic challenges related to illegal activities and social issues.
Importance of legal knowledge and integrity
Retired inspector Mohan Kottari, who attended the event as chief guest, stressed the importance of ground-level legal knowledge for police personnel. He said that officers must be well-versed in laws applicable at the grassroots level to ensure fair and effective enforcement.
He also highlighted the importance of proficiency in the local language, noting that it helps in better communication with the public and improves policing efficiency. Kottari cautioned officers against yielding to political pressure, urging them to carry out their duties with integrity and independence.
Early intervention to prevent larger issues
Kottari warned that issues left unaddressed at an early stage can escalate into major problems, disturbing law and order. Referring to recent developments in Dakshina Kannada district, he lauded the crackdown on cockfighting, calling it a necessary and commendable step.
He pointed out that the practice, often conducted under the guise of tradition and religion, had led to significant social and economic harm. Many families, he said, suffered financial losses, with individuals pledging gold jewellery and falling into debt due to gambling associated with cockfighting.
Following strict enforcement measures, he noted, such practices have reduced considerably, contributing to greater financial security among affected families, particularly women.
Felicitation of retired personnel
As part of the programme, a total of 49 retired and voluntarily retired police personnel were felicitated for their service and contributions to the department. The event also featured an impressive march past by various police contingents, showcasing discipline and coordination.
Several senior officials were present on the occasion, including Bantwal subdivision ASP S. Kumar Sharma, Deputy Commissioners of Police Mithun and Ravishankar, Additional SP Anil Kumar Boomereddy, and KSRP 7th Battalion Commandant Hemanth Kumar.
Conclusion
The Karnataka State Police Flag and Welfare Day programme in Mangaluru served as a platform to reinforce the values of discipline, integrity, and preparedness within the police force. With senior officials emphasising accountability and proactive policing, the event highlighted the department’s commitment to maintaining law and order while strengthening public trust.
