Bantwal: Bantwal town police seized a truck allegedly transporting more than 20 cattle illegally and in a cruel manner near the Kalladka flyover on Wednesday, September 30.
The action was taken after police received credible information about the transportation of the cattle in a large truck travelling from the Gundya side towards Mangaluru.
Members of Hindu organisations reportedly came to know about the movement of the vehicle and alerted the police. Acting on the information, Bantwal town police reached the location near the Kalladka flyover and inspected the truck.
Driver flees from spot
During the inspection, the driver allegedly fled from the vehicle and managed to escape from the spot.
Police subsequently took control of the truck and found more than 20 cattle inside. The animals were rescued and the vehicle was seized by the Bantwal town police.
The circumstances surrounding the transportation, including the purpose and manner in which the cattle were being carried, are now part of the police investigation.
Cattle rescued, truck seized
Following the seizure, police rescued the cattle from the truck. The vehicle was taken into custody and brought under investigation as part of the case registered at Bantwal town police station.
The police are also attempting to establish the identity of the driver who fled from the spot and determine the circumstances behind the alleged illegal transportation.
The cattle were reportedly being taken towards Mangaluru from the Gundya side when the vehicle was intercepted near Kalladka.
Investigation under way
A case has been registered at Bantwal town police station in connection with the incident. Police are investigating the alleged illegal transportation and the conditions in which the cattle were being carried.
Officials are also expected to examine the vehicle and other available evidence as part of the investigation.
The identity of the persons involved in the transportation and the destination of the cattle will be established as the investigation progresses.
Police have not yet disclosed further details regarding the sections invoked in the case or the identity of the vehicle owner.
The incident comes amid continued police action against alleged illegal transportation of cattle in Dakshina Kannada. The Bantwal town police are continuing their investigation into the seized truck and efforts are under way to trace the driver.
