Mangaluru: The family members of late police constable G.N. Harish received a cheque for ₹70 lakh on January 14 under the Bank of Baroda’s Group Insurance Scheme for Police Personnel. The cheque was formally handed over by the bank’s Mangaluru regional head, C.V.S. Chandrasekhar, in the presence of Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy, offering financial support to the bereaved family nearly a year after the tragic incident.

The cheque was presented as part of the insurance coverage extended to police personnel, aimed at providing financial security to families in the event of untimely death while in service or due to unforeseen circumstances.

Cheque handed over under group insurance scheme

The Bank of Baroda’s Group Insurance Scheme for Police Personnel is designed to support families of police staff who lose their lives prematurely. Officials said the scheme reflects the bank’s commitment to welfare measures for uniformed services.

During the cheque handover ceremony, senior police officials and bank representatives acknowledged the sacrifice made by the constable and expressed solidarity with the family. Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said such initiatives provide much-needed financial stability to families coping with personal loss.

Bank officials stated that the scheme ensures timely assistance and urged eligible police personnel to remain aware of the benefits available under such insurance policies.

Tragic accident after engagement ceremony

Constable G.N. Harish, aged 30, was attached to the Kankanady Town Police Station. On February 5, 2025, he met with a fatal accident while returning to work on his motorcycle. The incident occurred near Arathodu in Sullia, just days after he had participated in his engagement ceremony on February 2.

According to officials, passers-by rushed Harish to a hospital in Sullia immediately after the accident. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, he was later shifted to A.J. Hospital in the city for advanced medical care.

Declared brain dead, organs donated

Despite sustained medical efforts, Harish was declared brain dead on February 8, 2025. In a gesture that was widely appreciated by the medical fraternity and police department alike, his family consented to organ donation.

His liver and one kidney were transplanted to patients at A.J. Hospital, while his other kidney was transplanted to a patient at KMC Hospital. The organ donation helped save multiple lives and was hailed as an act of immense courage and compassion by the grieving family.

Doctors involved in the transplants had earlier said the timely decision by the family enabled successful procedures and gave new hope to critically ill patients.

Police department remembers constable’s service

Senior police officers recalled Harish as a dedicated and sincere constable who had served with commitment. His untimely death had cast a shadow over the department, particularly as it occurred at a time when he was beginning a new phase in his personal life.

Officials said the department continues to stand by the family and assist them with all entitled benefits and support measures. They added that welfare schemes, including insurance coverage, play a crucial role in safeguarding the interests of police families.

Conclusion

The handing over of the ₹70 lakh insurance cheque marks an important step in providing financial relief to the family of late constable G.N. Harish. While no compensation can replace the loss of a loved one, officials said such support acknowledges the service rendered by police personnel and reinforces the commitment of institutions to stand by their families in times of tragedy.
