Mangaluru: A massive bike rally was organised in Mangaluru on Saturday as part of a special voter awareness campaign aimed at encouraging citizens to verify their electoral details and participate actively in the democratic process. The programme was jointly organised by the Election Commission of India, the Dakshina Kannada district administration, the SVEEP committee, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat and the Mangaluru City Corporation.
The rally formed part of the ongoing voter list revision campaign and sought to spread awareness about the importance of maintaining an accurate electoral roll. Officials appealed to all eligible citizens to ensure their names are included in the voters’ list and to make use of the opportunity to update their electoral details wherever necessary.
Deputy Commissioner flags off rally
Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. flagged off the rally by waving the green flag at the Mangaluru City Corporation premises in Lalbagh.
The rally commenced from the corporation premises and travelled through prominent roads in the city before concluding at Kadri Park. Participants rode through the designated route carrying messages promoting voter awareness and encouraging public participation in the electoral process.
The event attracted officials from various government departments and civic bodies, who joined the campaign to spread awareness among residents.
Focus on voter list revision
Speaking on the occasion, officials highlighted the significance of the ongoing voter list revision exercise undertaken by the Election Commission of India.
They urged eligible voters to verify whether their names are included in the electoral roll and ensure that any corrections relating to names, addresses or other personal details are completed within the stipulated time.
Officials also encouraged first-time voters who have attained the eligible voting age to enrol themselves so they can exercise their democratic right during future elections.
The awareness drive focused on ensuring that the electoral roll remains accurate, transparent and inclusive.
Election Commission’s key message
The campaign was organised under the Election Commission’s voter awareness theme:
“No eligible electors left out, no ineligible person included.”
Officials explained that the objective of the campaign is to ensure that every eligible citizen is registered while preventing the inclusion of ineligible entries in the electoral roll.
They emphasised that a clean and updated voters’ list is essential for conducting free, fair and transparent elections.
SVEEP programme promotes democratic participation
The awareness initiative was conducted under the Election Commission’s Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme.
SVEEP is designed to educate citizens about the importance of voting, increase voter registration and improve participation in elections through various awareness activities across the country.
Officials said such campaigns play an important role in reaching different sections of society, particularly young and first-time voters, and help strengthen democratic values by encouraging informed electoral participation.
Participants also promoted the Election Commission’s “Vote for Sure” campaign, which urges every eligible voter to cast their vote responsibly.
Senior officials participate
Several senior district and civic officials took part in the programme.
Those present included Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Narvade Vinayak Karbhari, Mangaluru City Corporation Commissioner Ravichandra Nayak, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy, Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Dr Arun K., along with officers from various government departments.
The participation of senior officials underscored the administration’s commitment to ensuring greater public awareness regarding voter registration and electoral participation.
