Puttur: A bike rider sustained critical injuries in a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a car at Nekkilady on the night of Thursday, December 11. The incident occurred along the Chatushpada National Highway, causing tension among commuters using the busy stretch.
Rider travelling on the wrong side
The injured rider has been identified as Badruddin, a resident of Matha, who was reportedly employed at a hotel in Kootale. According to preliminary police reports, Badruddin was travelling on the wrong side of the road while heading from Uppinangady towards Nekkilady. A car travelling towards Uppinangady from the opposite direction collided with his bike head-on, leaving him seriously hurt.
Eyewitnesses stated that the impact of the collision was severe, throwing Badruddin off the motorcycle and leaving the vehicle badly damaged. Local residents and passers-by rushed to the spot to assist the injured rider before informing the authorities.
Shifted to Mangaluru for advanced care
Badruddin was initially rushed to Puttur Hospital for emergency treatment. However, due to the seriousness of his injuries, doctors advised immediate transfer to Mangaluru for specialised care. He was subsequently shifted to a private hospital for further treatment.
Hospital sources reported that the rider has suffered multiple injuries, and his condition remains critical.
Police take up investigation
Police arrived at the scene soon after receiving information about the accident. They conducted a spot inspection and collected preliminary evidence. Early findings indicate that riding on the wrong side of the highway was the primary cause of the collision.
Officers emphasised the importance of adhering to traffic rules, especially on national highway stretches with heavy vehicular movement. They also urged motorists and riders to exercise caution during night-time travel.
A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and whether negligence or overspeeding contributed to the accident.
Road safety remains a concern
Accidents on the Chatushpada National Highway have been reported frequently, with local residents expressing concern over rash driving, lack of proper lighting in certain stretches, and motorists choosing to ride against the flow of traffic. Thursday’s accident has once again highlighted the need for stricter enforcement and greater awareness among road users.
Authorities are expected to review whether additional cautionary signage, reflective markers, or stricter monitoring could help reduce such incidents in the area.
