Mangaluru: Burglars broke into a house at Kavattharu near Mulki and stole around 21 grams of gold ornaments after allegedly breaking open the rear door while the family members were away. The theft came to light when the homeowner returned later in the day and found the house ransacked.

House targeted when family was away

The burglary occurred at a house named ‘Sri Bhramari’, located near the Panjinadka–Kavattharu main road. The house belongs to Balakrishna Shettigar, who lives there with his wife Nalinakshi Shettigar, their recently married son Sushil, and daughter-in-law.

According to the family, Balakrishna, Sushil and his wife leave for work every morning, while Nalinakshi usually remains at home.

However, on Saturday, Nalinakshi also left the house in the morning to visit the Marigudi temple in Kaup. The house remained locked during her absence, providing an opportunity for the burglars to strike.

The theft was discovered when she returned home later in the day and noticed signs of forced entry.

Rear door broken open

In her complaint to the police, Nalinakshi stated that the burglars entered the house after breaking open the rear door.

Once inside, they searched several cupboards and drawers before locating the keys to the locker, which had been kept inside a cupboard in one of the bedrooms.

Using the keys, the intruders opened the locker and stole five gold rings, a gold bracelet and a gold chain.

The thieves also searched another bedroom, thoroughly ransacking the wardrobe in an apparent attempt to find more valuables.

Police said the total quantity of gold ornaments stolen is estimated to be around 21 grams.

Police begin investigation

The Mulki police have registered a case based on the complaint and launched an investigation into the burglary.

Officers are expected to examine CCTV footage from nearby areas, collect forensic evidence from the house and question local residents as part of the investigation to identify those responsible for the theft.

Police have urged residents to ensure that valuables are securely stored and to remain vigilant, particularly when homes are left unattended for extended periods.

The investigation is continuing.
