Coastal Erosion Devastates Mangalore Residents During Monsoon

Mansoon

Mangalore: The monsoon season has turned the coastal paradise of Mangalore into a battleground against severe sea erosion. Areas such as Battappadi, Mogaveera Patna, and Seaground face destruction as the once calm sea wreaks havoc on homes and livelihoods. This year, residents are again grappling with the relentless waves that have already swallowed several properties.

Hasinaar from Battappadi shared her distress, noting that her sister’s house has collapsed, and she has been displaced for over a month, living with relatives. Hajira, an 80-year-old local, lamented the drastic changes in shoreline over the years, blaming ineffective temporary measures and broken promises from officials.

Tourism has also suffered, with Rajesh from New Vasco Resort reporting a significant drop in bookings due to the erosion. The local community, frustrated with the lack of effective solutions, is urging for the construction of protective barriers. Although a ₹25 crore project was proposed, it remains unfulfilled. The National Institute of Technology, Karnataka (NITK) has suggested a “short groynes” model, but its future is uncertain.
