Mangaluru: Widespread monsoon rainfall continued across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Monday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to extend a yellow alert until August 9. While the showers brought relief from the recent dry spell, authorities have cautioned residents about the possibility of thunderstorms, gusty winds and localised flooding in low-lying areas.
The persistent rainfall has led to rising river levels, waterlogging in some villages and precautionary evacuations in flood-prone regions. Officials are monitoring the situation closely as more rainfall is forecast over the coming days.
IMD extends yellow alert till August 9
The IMD has forecast widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds across the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi until August 9.
District administrations have urged residents to remain alert, particularly those living in vulnerable areas near rivers, streams and hilly terrain prone to landslides and tree falls.
Rain lashes several parts of Dakshina Kannada
Several locations across Dakshina Kannada, including Mangaluru, Bantwal, Puttur, Ullal, Thokkottu, Talapady, Mudipu, Kalladka, Mani, Uppinangady, Belthangady, Sullia and Kadaba, received widespread rainfall during the morning hours.
Although rainfall intensity reduced slightly during the afternoon, light to moderate showers continued throughout the day under overcast skies.
Netravathi river level recedes
The Netravathi River, which had risen sharply due to heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats over the weekend, showed signs of receding by Monday evening.
Its water level reportedly fell from 8.3 metres on Sunday evening to around 6.4 metres by Monday evening. However, authorities continued to monitor the river as further rainfall is expected this week.
Families shifted to safer locations
As a precautionary measure, officials shifted members of 15 families from Aladka near Panemangaluru to safer locations after floodwaters threatened residential areas.
While floodwaters that had entered several houses and commercial establishments in parts of Bantwal receded by Monday morning, water continued to remain in some agricultural fields.
Udupi also receives widespread showers
Except for Byndoor taluk, most parts of Udupi district experienced widespread rainfall.
The district witnessed light to moderate showers during the morning, followed by another spell of steady rainfall in the afternoon. Heavy rain in rural areas by evening increased the flow in rivers, streams and rivulets across the district.
Authorities urge caution
Officials have advised residents to avoid venturing near overflowing rivers, streams and water bodies while asking motorists to drive carefully on roads vulnerable to waterlogging and tree falls.
Emergency teams remain on standby, and district administrations are expected to continue reviewing weather conditions as the IMD forecasts more rain throughout the week.
